How to estimate a pile.

Start with a small group you can count, then use it to judge the rest.

  1. Choose a small group

    Find a patch where you can count about five or ten objects. Use it as a reference for the rest of the pile.

  2. Estimate the number of groups

    Look for patches of a similar size and density. Multiply your reference count by the number of patches you think fit.

  3. Allow for gaps and hidden objects

    Reduce your estimate for empty space. Add something for objects hidden behind or underneath the ones you can see. This part will be less certain.

  4. Check the result

    After the count is revealed, note how far your guess was above or below it. If you keep missing in the same direction on similar piles, adjust your next estimate.
